Great Alaska Give-Away Guidelines
What’s the purpose of the GREAT ALASKA GIVE-AWAY?
- To conserve the earth’s resources by promoting re-use of your usable give-away items
- To provide a convenient way for local people to share their abundance with their neighbors
- To create an economical alternative for disposal of unwanted items
- To save Municipal tax dollars by extending the life of the landfill
When will the GIVE-AWAY occur?
The first Saturday of the month, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., June through September (June 2, July 7, August 4, September 1, 2012)What can be given away?
- Books, CDs and DVDs
- Furniture, electronics and small appliances
- Sports equipment and toys
- Yard and garden tools
- Kitchen gadgets, dishes, pot and pans
- Construction material (nails, paint, wood, roofing material)
- Clothing
What items should NOT be given away?
- Hazardous material (e.g., chemicals, pesticides, paint thinner and other solvents)
- Unsafe items (e.g., recalled baby equipment, electrical items with frayed cords, broken toys). Check on the safety of items at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website.
- Items carrying bedbugs (e.g., upholstered furniture, linens, mattresses, clothing)
- Live animals
- Visit the Municipality of Anchorage Solid Wastes Services website for information on where to recycle materials not accepted by this program or the landfill.
What are the guidelines for those with re-usable items to give/share?
- Arrange your useable give-way items at the end of your driveway on Saturday morning.
- If you agree to follow the guidelines on this page, download the GREAT ALASKA GIVE-AWAY LOGO. Post the logo on or near your items.
- Be sure that your give-away items are far away from any items you or your neighbors want to keep.
- All items remaining at the end of the day should be removed from the roadway that evening. You can make arrangements with a local charity such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters (563-1997) the Arc of Anchorage (337-6390) or the Salvation Army (561-4670) to have a truck pick up the leftover items.
What is considered good Treasure-Seeker etiquette?
- Only take items marked with the GREAT ALASKA GIVE-AWAY logo.
- Respect other people’s property – don’t walk or drive on people’s lawns or gardens
- Don’t discard any of your items at someone else’s driveway.
- Obey the traffic laws (e.g., don’t block traffic, park illegally or block people’s driveways)
- Watch out for children and pets.
